Stockholm to Oslo without a car

A single train, operated jointly by Sweden’s SJ and Norway’s Vy, leaves Stockholm Central and heads west across Värmland, crossing into Norway near Kornsjö or via Karlstad depending on the exact service, before arriving at Oslo Sentralstasjon about six hours later.

Some timetables route the trip with a change at Karlstad or Kongsvinger rather than running fully direct — check the specific departure when booking, since both direct and one-change options usually exist on the same day.

SJ pricing is dynamic, so booking a few weeks ahead through the SJ or Vy app typically brings a one-way fare down to around 45€, while tickets bought a day or two before departure can cost noticeably more. There is no need for a rail pass on this single route.

A seasonal overnight sleeper option sometimes runs on this corridor, letting you save a hotel night, though the daytime train is the more reliable year-round choice.

This is a scenery ride more than a sightseeing one: hours of forest, lakes and red timber cottages roll by, with Värmland’s countryside — the setting for many Swedish folk tales — filling much of the window. There are few dramatic landmarks, but it’s a genuinely restful way to cross a border.

Bring snacks and something to read or watch — onboard catering is limited, and this is a trip best enjoyed at a slower pace rather than rushed through.

Stockholm Central sits in the heart of the city, connecting directly to the metro (Tunnelbana) and the pendeltåg commuter trains, so most neighbourhoods are a short ride away. Oslo Sentralstasjon is just as central, right by the harbour and the Oslo Opera House, with trams and the metro leaving from the same building.

Neither city needs a car once you arrive: both have extensive, well-integrated transit systems, and central Oslo in particular is compact enough to see much of on foot.
